- gives us some idea of the excitement of a medieval skyline.  The towers were city fortresses, the final rallying point and refuge for the extended families and clan groupings which continually fought for dominance.  They were mostly razed by statute, or cut down to the general roof-line of the streets, as each commune sought an end to internecine strife.
